Hallward’s Ted Talk

Hallward’s Ted Talk

How telling our silenced stories can change the world by Anne Hallward was a Ted talk that we watched in class and had to annotate. Hallward had many claims that were in her talk, but I think one of the most important claims was that ” shame is a lethal health treat”. Hallward says that “shame is essentially at the heart of everything,”, it is at the heart of depression because you feel unworthy and she even says it’s at the hear of suicide. I do agree that shame can be very harmful because once you feel ashamed of something you are less likely to talk about it and then you feel worse and it is a circle that keeps on going. Another topic that Hallward talks about is how when people talk about their shame and what is most personal to us, it is almost the most universal thing as well. Many people feel the same or have similar experiences and once someone else tells that story so many other people come forward and feel accepted, almost like that can now tell their story as well. With the radio show that Hallward started there were so many people came to talk and they talked not just for their benefit of healing but because “If telling my story will help one other person, I will do it.” They wanted to help people with their shame as well.

  1. You have a good grip of this essence of AH’s argument. How would you paraphrase: “shame is essentially at the heart of everything,”? Just wanted to point out that picking quotes that you the writer will need to explain will do wonders for your argument and help to drive your points further. When we pick quotes that are too self-explanatory, we don’t leave ourselves any room to expand. It is still a good quote! But just pointing this out to you–
