Barclay’s Hybrid

Barclay’s Hybrid

When anyone brings up the idea of genetic editing many people get uncomfortable. The idea of editing someones genes is a very controversial topic and with it being controversial comes with it the need for laws and regulations. In today’s day and age scientist can practically get a way with anything. There are some rules and regulations but how well are they being followed and how do we know who is following these rules, as well as how other countries are following these rules. There needs to be some sort of group that makes regulations and laws that go with research and what scientist are doing and make sure that they are strict with no loopholes where everyone is following them around the world. In china there was a man named He Jiankui who edited the genes of twin girls and made them HIV resistant. He spoke to many different scientist and bioethicists who all told him that it was a bad idea to be editing human embryo genes, that there still needed to be so much research before anyone even thought about editing genes but He went ahead anyway and “he took the absence of a red light as a green one.” (Atlantic). There are ethical principles that are in place for these sort of “rouge” scientist to follow and he went against them. If a scientist who the public is supposed to put their trust in because they are telling us information that we don’t know any better about is going around and not following the rule why should we believe what any scientist or even doctor has to say. The DL talks about ” The higher the level of knowledge and power, the greater must be our sense of more responsibility”(Dalai Lama 63). He is saying that the more knowledge someone has the more responsibility they have, they can’t go around telling false claims or not follow the rules and do whatever they want. There needs to be stricter rules that the people with any sort of power need to follow because if they don’t follow these rules then they will go against their morals and could end up doing something before anyone is even ready to even consider it a possibility.

The technology that we have today is capable of many things and we can use what we have in many different ways. With the upside of technology and all the great things that it can do there are downsides as well. Scientist have the chance to eliminate deadly diseases or even grow more food for the planet, for those who don’t have food. The DL talks about how “we need to relate to the challenges we face as a single human family rather than as members of a specific nationalities, ethnicities, or religions.”(Dalai Lama 69) The DL is saying that with all the challenges that we face as a country or even the word, we should think of everyone as human beings and that we all want to live instead of thinking about everyone by their sex or skin color. Kenji Yoshino talks about similar ideas about how we have to come together instead of looking at what makes everyone different, he says “We must instead build a new civil rights paradigm on what draws us together rather than what drives us apart” (New Civil Rights 540). Yoshino is saying that if we want to make any progress then we have to stop looking at everyone differences and see what we all have in common and build on that. These two ideas connect because if we make decisions based on what everyone has in common or a common goal then we can make many medical, political, and even legal mile stones. We can use the technology we have for a common greater good by coming together to achieve a goal that benefits everyone

  1. “The technology that we have today is capable of many things and we can use what we have in many different ways.” Good topic sentence for a paragraph. You could go in so many different directions!

  2. Quote: “There are ethical principles that are in place for these sort of “rouge” scientist to follow and he went against them. If a scientist who the public is supposed to put their trust in because they are telling us information that we don’t know any better about is going around and not following the rule why should we believe what any scientist or even doctor has to say.”

Comment: I believe what you said 100% on what the scientists are doing is wrong. Many people wonder why scientist only give us little bits of informations and I agree with you 100% on what s happening.

Question: why do you think scientist do this? What is that important that they can’t tell us? Why are the hiding stuff from us? Do you believe they should tell us everything instead of lying? Do you believe they are lying or telling us little bits of info?
