Public Health and Vulnerable Populations

There are many different factors that influence the health of vulnerable and marginalized populations, looking more deeply at individual, environmental and societal factors. Some individual factors would include race, age, gender, sex, and income would all influence the health of a population. Environmental factors include where they live whether it is in the city or the suburbs, how many people they live with, whether they have transportation and if so what kind like a car or if they must take the bus or train to get to work. Societal factors would include education level, if they have a source of employment and income, food, and housing security, how far a grocery store it to them/ how close a fast-food restaurant is. Historically there are factors that influence a certain population as well, the African American population has always been given the short end of the stick and so they are more vulnerable to certain outcomes of life, they may not get the best health care or treatment based on their skin color so that influences their health, other populations like those in low income neighborhoods are also influenced because they may not be able to afford organic vegetable or fresh vegetables at all so they buy frozen meals which can then end up influencing their diet and health increasing risk for diabetes and heart failure.

Strategies that could help improve and resolve health and healthcare disparities include educating people are their options and making those options for healthcare easier to access. Making sure that everyone gets access to education and trying to implement that they graduate high school at least and giving more people opportunities to jobs after high school or further education. Also making child help services available for those that need to work but have children or resources for new parents that are scared and don’t know what they’re doing. Making sure that everyone get a chance and the resources they need, those that live in high social standings won’t need the same resources as those in inner city dwellings, also making sure that those who are helping and providing these resources know that everyone is different in what they need, some people have religious needs that have to be met while others have cultural aspects that are different than others.
