Trauma-Informed Care
Trauma exposure can impact all aspects of someone’s life, it can impact someone’s psychological well being by increasing their risk for having depression, anxiety and even PTSD, which can then impact someone’s social well-being as well. If someone has bad enough anxiety or depression, then it can impact how they interact with others especially if someone has PTSD and something triggers them without any waring. Trauma can also impact someone’s spiritual well-being as well, many time when someone goes through a traumatic even, they stop believing in whatever higher power they used to, going down the route of “why did this happen to me, why would this higher power allow for this to happen?” If someone has such a strong belief system and a traumatic event were to happen it could crush their support and everything, they believe in which can be very hard to deal with.
With trauma there are long term affects that they can have on someone’s experiences and life. Chronic long-term impacts from adverse childhood experiences can include health problems like asthma, mental illnesses like depression and substance misuse in not only childhood but also into adulthood. Knowing the signs and what to look for can help someone even in the slightest. We can apply Trauma-Informed Care principles not only in nursing practice but our everyday lives as well. These principles include safety, so knowing how to make an environment feel safe as well as providing safety for someone that may be in danger. Being a trusting person that someone can go to not only in nursing but also in general, being someone that others can go to and making them feel trusted and safe is always something that is to be strived for. In nursing, knowing different cultural or gender issues and how those can impact someone’s trauma and knowing how to help someone in that moment and making them feel like they have a voice and are empowered, or even being that voice for them if they can’t speak up. Being a nurse means talking on a lot, but being able to help others is what the job entails and if you can help someone with trauma to make their life easier that is something we should all strive for.
